Why this tool is useful
Contrast ratio is the ratio of a display brightest white to its darkest black, and it fundamentally determines how much visual depth and dimensionality images appear to have on screen. This grayscale test provides a gradient from pure black to pure white, allowing you to assess both white peak brightness and shadow black depth simultaneously. A monitor with poor contrast ratio will show shadows that look gray rather than black, and this test will reveal how far your display darkest level deviates from true black.
